Install and update
System requirements, installing the APK, the first launch and how updates arrive.
Requirements#
- Android 8.0 (API 26) or newer. The app targets Android 17 (API 37).
- About 200 MB free space for the app itself. Offline models (0.3 to 2.6 GB) and Linux workspaces need more.
- Internet for CX AI, web search and integrations. Offline models work without it.
Camera, GPS, microphone, fingerprint, Wi-Fi and telephony hardware are all optional: the app installs on phones without them and simply hides what cannot work.
Installing#
- Download the APK from cxagent.pages.dev (Download page).
- Open it and allow "Install unknown apps" for your browser or file manager when Android asks.
- Open CX Agent. You see the welcome screens, the terms, and then the chat.
First launch#
The onboarding flow shows a few cards: what CX does, the AI browser, CX PDF and Share-to-CX, skills, privacy ("your chats stay yours"), a request for notification permission ("Know when CX is done") and the choice How should CX think?:
- CX AI: ready right now, free, no key. Picks the best model for each message.
- My own API key: Claude, Gemini, Groq, any OpenAI-compatible API, or sign in with ChatGPT. Providers opens after setup.
You can change this any time in Settings → AI models → Providers.
Updates#
CX Agent checks for new versions itself (unless it was installed from Google Play, where self-update is turned off by policy).
- When a newer version exists you see Update / Later. Update downloads the APK with Android's DownloadManager and shows progress; Android then asks you to install it. Your chats and data stay.
- The CX team can mark a version as required. Then a full-screen Update required page appears with Update now and I already updated — check again.
- During maintenance a Under maintenance screen may appear with a retry button.
- CX Updates (drawer) lists posts, new skills and new orbits published by the team, without reinstalling.
The agent also has a check_app_updates tool, so you can simply ask "is there a CX update?".
